Certified E-Discovery Specialists and the 2012 ACEDS Conference

March 30th, 2012 → 4:05 pm @ Ari Kaplan

I spoke today with Robert Hilson, the editorial director for the Association of Certified E-Discovery Specialists, which is hosting its 2012 Annual Conference next week (April 2-4) at the Westin Diplomat in Hollywood, Florida.  We discussed the organization’s growth, its impact on the legal community, and his expectations for the upcoming event.  Listen to our interview below:

mHealth – Reinventing Health Care

March 28th, 2012 → 7:13 am @ Ari Kaplan

When I wrote Reinventing Professional Services, I spotlighted changes in many different fields, including medicine.  I spoke with visionary leaders like Bryan Vartabedian, MD, a pediatric gastroenterologist at Texas Children’s Hospital/Baylor College of Medicine, who writes and speaks about the convergence of social media and medicine, and practitioners.  I also profiled transformations in teleradiology and sleep medicine, as well as the promise of pharmaceutical vending machines and obtaining an online diagnosis, among others.

Adam Bluestein takes a comprehensive look at how mobile health care is revolutionizing the practice of medicine in Fast Company’s February issue: As Smartphones Get Smarter, You May Get Healthier: How mHealth Can Bring Cheaper Health Care To All, which includes this great infographic.

Great Infographic – The Real Cost Of Patent Reform

March 23rd, 2012 → 2:25 pm @ Ari Kaplan

The February issue of Fast Company features this interesting infographic about The Real Cost of Patent Reform (click on the link for the image) showing, among other things, that the average patent wait time of 34 months is likely to drop, along with false-marking lawsuits and VC funding (because “in a first-to-file system, inventors have to be more careful about sharing ideas with anyone-including potential investors.”)

An Infographic About How Higher Education Helps the Economy

March 14th, 2012 → 6:15 am @ Ari Kaplan

OnlineUniversities.com shared this unique infographic about How Higher Education Helps the Economy based on a study that PayScale conducted for Bloomberg Businessweek.  The short- and long- term success rates, as well as the corresponding unemployment statistics, for those in professional services is interesting.

Embracing the Globalization of Professional Services

March 6th, 2012 → 7:15 am @ Ari Kaplan

I speak and write often about collaboration. My research has also shown that successful rainmakers work in tandem – they attend events together, participate in masterminding groups, and find ways to create opportunity for one another. A variety of firms in different industries across the globe connect with one another by developing a formal partnership. I spoke with Simon Truskett, a Sydney-based senior partner at Clayton Utz in the firm’s Corporate Advisory / M&A group, who is the new chair of Lex Mundi, a global association of independent law firms, with 160 member firms in 102 countries.

The association features a client advisory council in which leading in-house counsel advise on ways to improve client service.   Members also exchange information on practice management, administrative support and technology usage.   In terms of trends, he noted Lex Mundi’s interest in broadening its reach in Africa and Asia because of increased competition from international firms and a more globalized client base that expects its professionals to provide services where they are.  Listen to our interview below:

Building A Unified Company Following Multiple Acquisitions

March 2nd, 2012 → 11:01 am @ Ari Kaplan

At Legal Tech NY 2012, I had the opportunity to speak with Jim Hammond, the Vice President for Global Marketing at Aderant about the company’s recent acquisitions and the cohesion of its various brands. He noted that the new company has a wider footprint in legal, financial, and practice management systems with Client Profiles; is fully integrating Compulaw for a seamless integration; and has a larger market share with CRM for business development used by firms all around the world.  He described it as “one company with multiple products” that is focusing on providing high value to its clients.  Watch our interview below:
