The Evolution of Continuing Legal Education
I spoke with Chris Osborn, the co-founder of Reeltime Creative Learning Experiences, a national provider of continuing education and professional development programs. We discussed the genesis of Reeltime Creative Learning Experiences, the programs it offers, how the delivery of continuing legal education has changed, and how it will continue to evolve.
Legal Tech CEO Shares Success Tips
I spoke with David Schnurman, the founder and CEO of Lawline, a leading provider of continuing legal education, and the author of The Fast Forward Mindset: How to Be Fearless & Focused to Accelerate Your Success (Highpoint Executive Publishing, 2019). We discussed his work at Lawline, the inspiration for The Fast Forward Mindset, the most impactful lesson in the book, its 30-day challenge, and suggestions for other entrepreneurs interested in writing a book, among other topics.
Legal Tech Start-Up Perspectives on Success in the New Year
I spoke with a number of the participants from the LexisNexis Legal Tech Accelerator, including:
- Ryan Alshak, the CEO of Ping, an artificial intelligence-supported timekeeping and analytics platform for enterprise-level time and billing at law firms.
- Alex Hewitt, the director of operations for vTestify, a web application that enables lawyers to conduct depositions and gather testimony remotely.
- Tunji Williams, the co-founder and CEO of DealWIP, a cloud-based workflow integration platform for corporate legal matters.
And, David Schnurman, the CEO of Lawline, a leading provider of continuing legal education, who shared insights from his upcoming book – Break Through Your Walls: Bring Your Entrepreneurial Sledgehammer.
We discussed lessons learned in 2017, how the legal industry will shift in 2018, and ways that legal tech start-ups take advantage of new technology, changing expectations, and general market trends in the New Year.
The Power of Personalized Learning
I spoke with Abdi Shayesteh, the founder and CEO of AltaClaro, an experiential learning platform for lawyers, who served for fifteen years as a corporate, bank regulatory and finance attorney in Silicon Valley and New York City, as well as throughout Asia, the Middle East and Europe.
We discussed the genesis of AltaClaro, the variety of content that it offers, and the evolution of online learning.
Redefining Online Education
“Learning inspires change,” says David Schnurman, the president and CEO of Lawline.com, a leading provider of online continuing legal education that is transforming the way professionals educate themselves on the web. In a discussion about the company’s new Lawline 2.0 initiative, which is making the site’s entire archive of over a thousand hours of programming free, Schnurman notes that “Lawline’s mission has always been to change the way people learn and since we are transitioning from a service-based economy to a knowledge-based economy, we are helping our audience make that change more seamlessly.”In addition to providing CLE accreditation services in 43 states (including for this course), Lawline.com also offers CFP programs for those in financial services, and CPE courses for those in accounting, among other fields. A self-described “lifelong learner,” Schnurman wanted to give others the opportunity to actively engage with technology to enhance the learning experience. Lawline 2.0 allows viewers to take “smart” notes that automatically form reference-like outlines, record five-minute course summaries for future use, and dynamically share their newly acquired expertise.
Pursuing a Principled Practice
During my recent appearance at the ACLEA conference, in part to sign books for attendees courtesy of Fastcase, I had the chance to interview Stuart Teicher, who is featured in Reinventing Professional Services and with whom I co-presented “Copywriting in a 140-Character World” at the Boston event.
Teicher notes that in order to achieve both professional success and personal satisfaction, one must pursue a principled practice guided by the rules of ethics in any particular discipline. Listen to how his advice can help you reinvent your business in the video below:
Cultivating Corporate Culture
I have been a fan of Lawline.com and its CEO, David Schnurman, for many years. He is always striving to build a better product by cultivating a culture that imbues it with passion. This ode to his commitment made me smile, but also prompts the viewer to ask how (if) your employees would pay tribute in the same way.
Reinventing Continuing Legal Education
The 47th Annual Meeting of the Association for Continuing Legal Education is taking place from July 30th through August 2nd in Boston and in anticipation of this event, CLE superstars, Stuart Teicher (one of the experts profiled in Reinventing Professional Services) and Sean Carter, co-hosted and produced the inaugural ACLEA podcast, which is both informative and entertaining. Given that LexThink founder, Matt Homann, is the co-chair of the planning committee for the upcoming event, it is certain to be an innovative success.
Like most of the legal community, CLE is experiencing a reinvention and during the Minneapolis stop on my North American tour with voice productivity powerhouse, BigHand, I had the opportunity to speak with Peter Berge, the Web Education Director for Minnesota CLE, who generously gave me a tour of the organization’s state-of-the-art facilities.
